Mónica Chao Janeiro is a leading expert in strategic sustainability, business transformation and ESG leadership in Spain. She has over 25 years’ experience in developing sustainable strategies and has worked with companies and organisations to integrate sustainability as a driving force for competitiveness and growth.
Mónica is the founder and managing partner of ACATIVA PARTNERS, a boutique consultancy firm specialised in business transformation, leadership and strategy from sustainability. Her remit at ACATIVA is to advise companies and organisations on defining and implementing advanced ESG strategies, helping them maximise their positive impact and their long-term value. Mónica is also the founder and chair of Women Action Sustainability (WAS), one of most influential women’s leadership and sustainability networks in Spain, and is a member of the Independent Expert Panel of the COFIDES Social Impact Fund (FIS).
Her career includes sustainability leadership roles at IKEA, NH Hotel Group, MAPFRE and Intu Properties; she has designed and driven social impact, circular economy, energy transition and decarbonisation projects in key sectors including retail, hospitality, real estate and financial. Her outstanding initiatives include the IKEA Allen Plan, with an investment of €10 million, and the setting up of the first textile SCRAP in Spain, a trailblazer in recycling and circular economy.
Along with her strategic work, Mónica is influential in the sustainable ecosystem. She is the editor of the ‘Al Día en Sostenibilidad’ newsletter, with over 10,000 subscribers, and actively takes part in forums and advisory councils on sustainable leadership and impact investment.
