TOWARDS A NEW MORE CIRCULAR EUROPEAN MARKET

  9:30 - 10: 00

We are experiencing a turbulent time in the history of Europe. Climate change and the deterioration of the environment are an existential threat that Europe and the rest of the world are facing, as well as the shortage of raw materials, the security of their supply and rising prices in a war situation on the European continent. All of this is going on as we are trying to recover from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To overcome these challenges, Europe is strongly committed to the European Green Deal, with the aim of transforming our society to make the EU an economy that is modern, efficient in the use of resources, competitive and fair.

On this path, a number of legislative measures have been approved over the past year, many of which have been called a true “transformation tsunami” that seek to live up to the magnitude of the challenge that we are facing.

Throughout the first day of the conference, the main advances in this field will be presented and discussed with leading economic stakeholders from the Basque industrial sector.

Purpose of the session: To activate the Basque business sector with respect to the challenges from the EU with conclusive and properly justified messages, expressed by opinion leaders in the business world.

CIRCULARITY IN THE VALUE CHAINS: BEST BUSINESS PRACTICES

The challenge of the Circular Economy lies in applying an integrative approach that brings together the entire value chain involved in the life cycle of activities, products and services that are put on the market. If we talk about value chains, we must talk about SMEs.

Small and medium enterprises are vital for the EU economy, as they represent 99% of European firms and two thirds of the jobs in the private sector. Increasing the competitiveness of SMEs is one of the priority objectives of the European Green Deal.

This second day of the conference will focus on analysing the implications, challenges and opportunities offered by the circular economy in the main value chains and will include the presentation of success stories in the words of those who have experienced them.

Purpose of the session: To be a showcase for “Made in the Basque Country” market solutions based on drivers and needs, in the main areas addressed the previous day, November23rd, with a sectoral focus that shows the reality of the circular economy through each value chain.

ECO-INNOVATION: COUNTRY RESPONSES TO EUROPEAN CHALLENGES

The path embarked upon by the European Commission in favour of achieving a real implementation of a Circular Economy model in the European Union is going to require a major boost to eco-innovation. For this reason, the European Commission considers Eco-innovation to be one of the keys to the future competitiveness of Europe, driver of future green markets that must be implemented.

Eco-innovation for a Circular economy is a general framework that requires collaborative, inter-company and inter-sectoral solutions. Therefore, work with and towards the community is compulsory and it is necessary to create meeting points for the companies carrying out the projects in order to generate new synergies in and between the value chains of the different sectors.

Purpose of the session: bring Basque stakeholders (public-private supply and demand) closer to various EU challenges in which there is high potential and mark the key role of Ihobe in the Basque Country.
