The Basque Government’s Minister for Industry, the Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, was born in Zarautz on 9 January 1974. After graduating in Sociology, majoring in Industrial Relations, from Deusto University, he moved to the United Kingdom to study for a master’s degree at the London School of Economics. Mikel began his career in London as a consultant at PWC. Between 2002 and 2022, he worked at BP PLC (formerly British Petroleum), the leading integrated energy company worldwide. In his last executive position at BP, he headed the integration of the new gas and renewables division, including setting up the new hydrogen, solar, marine and wind power businesses.
Prior to joining the Basque Government, he was an executive at Centrica PLC, the leading gas and electricity company of the United Kingdom, where he managed projects involving electricity generation, hydrogen and optimising renewables. During his career, he has lived in such different countries as the United Kingdom, the US, Russia, Angola and Brazil.
